I recently graduated with an LL.B from the University of Utrecht (2011-2016) and I completed my Erasmus exchange at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge (2015-2016). I was interested in studying at the University of Cambridge as I wanted to broaden my perspectives internationally, improve my academic legal English and learn more about the Common Law system. Furthermore, I was keen to meet people from all over the world to discuss global legal issues, to find legal answers to these questions. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to achieve these goals during my time in Cambridge.
As part of my Erasmus exchange,
I studied Competition Law, Law of Contract and Intellectual Property Law. These courses provided me the opportunity to learn more about the Common Law system, which is the complete opposite of what we have in the Netherlands, namely the Civil Law system. The pedagogy and course structure were challenging and, dare I say, mind-blowing.
However, as the lecturers and supervisors were specialized and experienced in their fields, the learning process was made easier.
As my studies at the University of Cambridge provides me the foundation to participate in the ever-increasing global economy, with a global perspective, I would recommend anyone to study at the University of Cambridge as an Erasmus student.
Besides doing my Masters degree in Corporate Law with the track Competition Law at the University of Utrecht, I currently work as a paralegal at a law firm called ‘De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek’ in Amsterdam in the Competition & Regulation department.
After my studies, I would like to work for an international law firm or company in the Netherlands or the UK.
I am certain that the experiences and skills that I gained during my time in Cambridge would put me in good stead for my future plans.
Tamar Bastiaan, 2015-16, University of Utrecht, Netherlands.
